What is Macular Degeneration?

Vonda Muncy, LAc, DiplAc, at Soul Potential Acupuncture & Wellness is one of a few practitioners in the Denver area offering Micro Acupuncture™, a safe treatment for macular degeneration that improves vision loss in about 80% of patients. Vonda offers exceptional care after completing two specialized training sessions — foundational and advanced Micro Acupuncture™ 48 — with the world-renowned expert in the field, Andy Rosenfarb, ND, L.Ac. To determine if you’re a good candidate for Micro Acupuncture, call the office in Castle Rock, Colorado, or schedule an appointment online.

What is macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration is an eye condition that occurs in a specific part of your retina called the macula. There are two types of macular degeneration:

Dry macular degeneration

This type affects 80% of patients diagnosed with macular degeneration. It develops over the years, as the macula thins out and clumps of protein and fat called drusen build up under the retina. As drusen slowly enlarge, they damage cells in the macula, gradually causing vision loss.

Wet macular degeneration

This type of macular degeneration occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow behind the retina. These fragile blood vessels leak into the surrounding area, causing swelling that damages the macula. Wet macular degeneration causes faster vision loss compared to dry macular degeneration.

What symptoms develop due to macular degeneration?

You won’t have symptoms in the early stages of macular degeneration. As the condition worsens — as drusen enlarge or fluids build up — you’ll experience:

  • Blurry vision
  • Distorted vision (straight lines look wavy)
  • Diminishing color vision
  • Difficulty seeing in low light
  • Loss of central vision

As you start to lose central vision, you’ll see a dark spot in the center of your visual field. The spot blurs out faces and makes it hard to read.

What is Micro Acupuncture™, and how does it help macular degeneration?

Micro Acupuncture targets 48 acupuncture points in your hands and feet. These points directly stimulate the eyes, effectively treating conditions like macular degeneration without needing to insert needles into or around your eyes.

Dr. Rosenfarb, the leading expert in the field of Chinese Medical Ophthalmology, has extensive experience treating patients with macular degeneration, helping to preserve their vision. He has trained Vonda to perform the same techniques.

If your vision responds to 12 Micro Acupuncture treatments, you can continue receiving acupuncture therapy until you’re satisfied with the results or no further improvement occurs. Many patients need a series of at least 30 treatments to achieve optimal vision improvement, then you’ll need about 1-2 yearly Micro Acupuncture sessions to maintain your results.

In the United States, more than 10,000 patients have received Micro Acupuncture and 80% experienced marked vision improvement. Micro Acupuncture is an especially important therapy because there are currently no medical treatments for dry macular degeneration and limited options for wet macular degeneration.

If you have macular degeneration and would like to learn more about Micro Acupuncture, call Soul Potential Acupuncture & Wellness or book an appointment online.
