Plantar Fasciitis Q & A

What is plantar fasciitis?

A broad ligament called the plantar fascia attaches to your heel and runs across the bottom of your foot to the base of your toes. This ligament supports the arch and absorbs shock every time you take a step.

When the plantar fascia suffers a tear or excessive stress, or if you develop problems with the arch, the ligament becomes inflamed and painful. That’s when you have plantar fasciitis.

What symptoms develop due to plantar fasciitis?

Heel pain is the key symptom of plantar fasciitis. However, your heel may become swollen and you can also experience pain in the arch. In most cases, the heel pain is worse when you first start walking after sleeping or resting, and then it feels better as you keep walking and the ligament stretches.

What causes plantar fasciitis?

The plantar fascia typically becomes inflamed when it’s exposed to ongoing stress, especially if you keep walking and putting pressure on the ligament after it’s injured and the pain begins.

The most common causes of plantar fasciitis include:

  • Flat feet or high arches
  • Repetitive or high-impact activities
  • Running in shoes that lack arch support
  • Overpronation (your foot rolls inward when you walk)

A tight Achilles tendon or calf muscle can also pull on the plantar fascia and cause inflammation.

How is plantar fasciitis treated?

Modifying your activities or temporarily immobilizing the affected foot gives the plantar fascia time to heal. If you need better arch support, using shoe inserts or prescription orthotics can help prevent future ligament damage.

Beyond these conservative measures, acupuncture may relieve your pain, reduce inflammation, and support healing in the damaged ligament. After reviewing several studies, researchers reported that acupuncture may reduce pain over 4-8 weeks of treatment better than standard therapy.

When you choose to have acupuncture treatment, Vonda inserts acupuncture needles in carefully targeted points along the energy pathways, called meridians, that are associated with your heel pain. The needles restore the balance of energy, strengthening the body’s natural healing ability. Additionally, acupuncture needles trigger events in your nervous system that lead to the release of your body’s natural pain killers.
